This piece is one in a series of paintings that revolve around the coexistence of beauty and danger. Depicted in this piece, an Orchid Praying Mantis is a seemingly delicate creature characterized by both vibrant and soft pinks, whites and purples. Elegant and miniature they live their lives mimicking orchid flowers (hence the name), moving in a light swaying motion as they walk as if being blown by the breeze. However, despite their dainty allure, they are an extremely predatory species, using their camouflage and lightning speed to hunt and ambush their prey. A beautiful contradiction. The inspiration for the set of paintings I made was the Greek goddess Persephone, who is the goddess of spring while also being the queen of the underworld.
